반려동물: 댕댕이와 냥이

 

여러분은 반려동물과 함께 사나요? 가장 흔한 강아지와 고양이부터 시작해서 달팽이, 도마뱀, 고슴도치, 금붕어, 앵무새, 햄스터 등 정말 다양한 생물들이 우리와 참 긴밀한 관계를 맺으며 살아가고 있어요. 저는 2016년 한여름에 찾아온 귀여운 강아지 한 마리와 오순도순 잘살고 있어요. 우리 왕자님의 이름은 또리이고, 믹스견이에요. 아빠는 물론이고 저와 언니가 매일같이 또리에게 관심과 사랑을 구걸하고 있지만, 또리는 엄마를 가장 좋아합니다. ^^...;

 

 

정말 사랑스럽죠? 제가 어렸을 때에는 사람들이 집에서 같이 지내는 동물을 애완동물이라고 흔히 부르곤 했습니다. 그런데 ‘애완’이라는 말은 인간의 시각에서, 순전히 인간의 즐거움을 위해 어떤 대상을 가까이에 둔다는 느낌이 강합니다. 함께 산다는 의미보다는 일방적으로 ‘사육’한다는 느낌이 들어요. 물론 사육이란 말이 완전히 틀린 표현은 아니지만요. 네이버 사전에 따르면 애완이란 단어는 “동물이나 물품 따위를 좋아하여 가까이 두고 귀여워하거나 즐김”이라고 설명되는군요. 이 단어에는 수직적 관계가 명확하게 드러나죠. 그렇기 때문에 오늘날 사회에는 애완동물이라는 말을 쓰길 지양하고 그 대신 반려동물이라고 부르기를 지향하려는 강한 분위기가 있습니다.

반려라는 말에는 함께하는 존재, 짝이라는 의미가 있어요. 애완동물이라는 표현을 쓰면 함께 지내는 동물들이 우리에게 미치는 큰 영향이 크게 가려지게 된다고 생각해요. 반려동물과 함께 살면 정서적인 측면에서 큰 도움을 받을 뿐만 아니라 전반적인 삶의 모습이 바뀌어버리는데 말이에요. 말의 힘은 강합니다. 이런 식으로 표현이 바뀜으로써 우리가 반려동물을 대하는 태도도 크게 달라질 것이라 믿습니다. 저는 이것이 굉장히 긍정적인 변화라고 생각해서 꼭 소개해드리고 싶었어요. 아, 참고로 반려라는 단어는 생각보다 폭넓게 쓰입니다. 결혼해서 아내와 남편을 언급할 때 (인생의) 반려자라는 표현을 쓰기도 하고, 요즘에는 집에 들여놓는 식물을 반려식물이라고 부르기도 해요. 또 제가 봤던 한 기사에서는 노인들의 생활을 보다 편하게 만들어주고 적적함을 달래주기도 하는 핸드폰을 ‘반려폰’이라고 부르기도 했습니다.

댕댕이, 멍멍이

요즘 강아지를 다르게 부르는 이름이 생겼는데 소개해드릴게요. 우리말에서는 개가 짖는 소리를 ‘멍멍’, ‘왈왈’ 정도로 표현합니다. 그렇다 보니 아직 말하는 게 익숙하지 않은 어린아이들은 강아지를 ‘멍멍이’라고 부르기도 합니다. 꼭 아이들이 아니더라도 사람들이 이름 모를 강아지에게 말을 걸 때면 “멍멍아~ 강아지야~” 이렇게 부르곤 합니다. (“개야~”라고 하기엔 조금 웃기니까요, 하하.) 참 귀엽죠? 그리고 요즘 인터넷에서는―일상에서도 가끔 보입니다―사람들이 강아지를 ‘댕댕이’라고 부르는 모습을 흔히 볼 수 있어요. “댕댕이 너무 귀여워”, “나만 댕댕이 없어!” 이런 식으로 쓰이는데, 혹시 이렇게 부르게 된 이유가 짐작이 가시나요? 이는 바로 ‘멍멍이’와 ‘댕댕이’라는 단어의 생김새가 아주 유사하기 때문이에요. 또 ‘댕’이라는 소리 자체에 뭔가 귀여운 느낌이 있는 것도 한몫했겠죠?

고양이와 관련해서는 두 가지 표현을 소개해드리고 싶어요. 고양이를 키우는 사람에게는 ‘집사’라는 표현이 자주 따라붙습니다. 집사는 영어로는 butler에 해당해요. 왜 고양이를 키우는 사람들이 고양이 집사가 되었을까요? 저는 고양이를 키워본 적이 없어서 잘 모르지만, 이것은 고양이가 흔히 보이는 고고한(?) 표정과도 연관이 있을 것 같아요. 검색을 해보니 강아지들은 주로 여기저기 따라오면서 같이 놀자면서, 애교 있는 모습을 보여줄 때가 많지만 고양이들은 자신과 사람을 동급으로 취급하거나 자신보다 아래로 취급하는 것처럼 느껴질 때가 있다고 해요. 고양이를 키우면서 고양이는 주인이, 사람은 밥 주고 화장실을 치워주는 집사가 된 것처럼 느끼는 분들이 많은가 봐요. 고양이 집사와 비슷한 표현은 다른 나라에도 있는 것으로 알고 있어요. 사람들 생각하기란 다 비슷한가 봐요~ 아까 강아지는 ‘멍멍이’, ‘댕댕이’라고도 부른다고 알려드렸죠? 고양이는 우리말로 야옹, 야옹 울어서 ‘야옹이’라고 불리기도 하고, 또 ‘냥이’라고도 부르기도 해요. 굉장히 귀엽게 표현한 것이죠. 냥냥펀치 (냥냥+펀치)는 고양이가 장난감 등의 대상에 날리는 주먹을 의미한답니다. 퍽! ^^

Companion Animals: Cats and Puppies

 

Do you live with pets? Humans have formed very close relationships with a number of animals, from the common dogs and cats to snails, lizards, hedgehogs, goldfish, parrots, hamsters and so on. I am personally living with a cute dog that came into our world in the summer of 2016. This little prince’s name is Ddori (또리) and he is a mixed-breed dog (믹스견). Not only my dad but also my sister and I are begging for Ddori’s attention and love every day, but sadly he likes mum the most… ^^;

 

He’s very lovable, right? When I was young, people often called animals that we live with – pets – for 애완동물. But, 애완suggests these animals are there solely for the entertainment of humans. Rather than focusing on the fact that they live with us, the word instead connotes that they’re only around for the purposes of breeding. Of course, it’s not entirely wrong that they’re used for breeding, but according to Naver Dictionary, the definition of 애완 is “liking animals or items and keeps them close so as to love or cherish them.” From this definition, one can get a clear sense of the vertical relationship inherent in the word. Because of these issues, in today’s society there is a growing push to reject 애완동물 as a term and instead refer to these animals as 반려동물.

반려 means to exist together as companions. If one uses terms such as 애완동물, the influence that animals have on us is to a large degree underestimated. Pets can not only provide a huge emotional support but have a huge impact on your life in general. Because of this change of wording, I believe that our attitude towards pets will also change considerably. I think of this change as very positive, so this is something I really wanted to introduce to you! As a reference, the word 반려 can be used more broadly than you might think. When a husband or wife refers to each other, they might use the term “(life) companion” (반려자), and these days you can hear people refer to the plants they are growing at home as “companion plants” (반려식물). Also, in an article I read a while ago, phones that make life easier for the elderly and soothe their loneliness are also being referred to as companion phones (반려폰).

These days, a new word referring to dogs have started to pop up, so I thought I would introduce you to it. In Korean, the sound a dog makes is expressed as 멍멍 and 왈왈. As such, young children who are developing their speaking abilities often refer to puppies as 멍멍이. This is true not just for children, though, as people might say 멍멍아~ 강아지야~ to a dog if they don’t know its name. (Referring to it as 개야~ would sound a bit ridiculous haha!) It sounds cute, isn’t it? Also, on the internet (and also sometimes in real life) these days it is commonplace for people to refer to dogs as 댕댕이. “That 댕댕이 is so cute!”, “Is it only I who don’t have a 댕댕이?” You would use it in this kind of manner, but can you imagine why people have started to use this word? It is because 멍멍이 and 댕댕이 look very similar. And, 댕 sounds cute, so that also surely played a role!

 

I also want to introduce you to two expressions related to cats. People who raise cats are usually referred to as 집사. In English, this would be translated as butler. Wait, how come people who raise cats have become cat butlers? I have never raised a cat so I cannot know for sure, but I think this is related to the aloof-looking expression that cats often have. I tried searching for an answer, and it seems like whereas dogs often follow and play with their owners and have 애교, it often feels like cats think they are on the same level or even at a level above humans. It seems like a lot of people feel that the cat is the owner and the human is the butler who gives food and cleans the litter box. ^^; I know that there are similar expressions in other languages, so it seems like we all think similarly~ Earlier, I said that dogs can be referred to as 멍멍이and 댕댕이, right? In Korean, the sound cats make is referred to as 야옹, so we sometimes call cats for 야옹이! We also call cats for 냥이. It is a very cute expression! 냥냥펀치 is the kind of playful punch a cat throws sometimes. 퍽! ^^
